I started drawing cartoons as a child. In fourth grade, I created comic books that were so popular my classmates would willingly exchange their lunch money for them. In seventh grade, I sold my first single panel gag cartoon to a national magazine. When the paycheck arrived in my mailbox, my career was off and running! I started illustrating magazine articles, drawing comic strips and freelancing for newspapers and book publishers everywhere I could. As I learned the craft, I wrote letter after letter to professional cartoonists whose work I admired. (Yes, letters: believe it or not, we had neither e-mail nor IM back then - hard to imagine?) They all wrote back, graciously sharing their knowledge of the business with me, mentoring me and encouraging my efforts. My 1-2-3 Draw series of art instruction books is one way that I can return the favor they did for me, by encouraging and inspiring other budding cartoonists. As an entertaining hobby, a way to impress your friends, or a fun, challenging (did I mention challenging?) way to earn a living, cartooning is a fascinating profession. If you have questions about the business of cartooning, please feel free to e-mail me, I'll do my best to help you just like those other professionals helped me when I was starting out.
